Kenya’s track and field manager has been recalled from Rio Olympics after he was secretly filmed apparently offering to protect athletes from the drugs testing authorities.

Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper and Germany’s ARD television station say Major Michael Rotich was filmed by undercover investigators and he offered advance warnings to athletes for 13,100 U.S. dollars.

The newspaper said he had been expected to lead his team at the Rio Games opening ceremony on Friday, but did not go after being confronted with the allegations and has since been ordered to return to Kenya to face an investigation.

Rotich told the Sunday Times that he made the comments simply in an attempt to establish the identity of the people he was speaking to and to protect athletes.
